Signals in British Railway protect the route ahead. Your job is to turn each indication into an action early enough to stop safely: continue within the speed limit when the route is clear, create braking margin when warned, and stop before a danger signal. Passing a signal at danger is commonly called a SPAD. Community documentation reports a protection intervention and score penalty, but exact current penalties must be checked in game.
Use the aspect-to-action rule
The community wiki describes two-, three-, and four-aspect arrangements in different parts of the network. Do not identify safety only by the number of lamp housings. Read the illuminated aspect and the route context. A signal can be visually different from the last line you drove while still asking for the same basic action.
Build braking margin from the first warning
When a preliminary warning appears, look at speed, gradient, train response, and distance. Remove power and choose a reduction that gives you options. At caution, the plan should already be a stop at the next signal unless it visibly clears. Waiting to see red before braking makes the signal system useless.
Different trains and formations have different braking behavior. Weather or route updates may also change the feel. Learn one train on a familiar line, then leave more margin when moving to a longer or faster consist. The How to Drive guide covers progressive braking at stations and signals.
If you stop short of a danger signal, keep the train secured. Do not creep past it because the timetable is late or another player appears to move. Wait for the aspect to change and confirm that the route ahead belongs to your service.
Read banner repeaters
Banner repeaters help when a main signal is difficult to see, such as around a curve or from a long platform. Community documentation describes a diagonal “off” display when the repeated signal is not at danger and a horizontal “on” display when the repeated signal is at danger. Use the repeater to prepare; continue looking for the actual signal it repeats.
A repeater is not a separate authority to exceed the speed limit or ignore a later change. If the display is unclear, reduce speed until the main signal can be identified. At platforms, the repeaters can help both Drivers and Guards understand the starting signal without pretending that every station has the same equipment.
Use OFF indicators for dispatch
An OFF indicator is intended to help platform staff determine whether the starting signal permits departure. Community documentation describes a lit indication as showing the starting signal is not at danger and an unlit indication as a reason not to dispatch. The Guard should still use the current station layout and starting signal where visible.
For Drivers, a Guard’s departure signal is not enough by itself. Confirm the starting signal, door interlock, direction, and route. For Guards, a ready timetable and closed doors are not enough while the OFF indication remains unlit or the starting signal remains red.
Understand semaphore routes
The community signal reference describes upper-quadrant semaphore signaling on the Fayre Branch in the documented version. A raised stop arm can indicate proceed, while a horizontal stop arm indicates danger. Distant arms warn about the signal ahead, and combined posts can display both current and following information.
Treat semaphore shapes as route-specific learning. Do not import every real-world railway rule into the game or assume the branch remains unchanged after an update. Drive at a speed that lets you read the current model and stop. Shunt or disc signals in depots govern limited movements and should not be treated as main-line clear aspects.
Avoid a SPAD
The best SPAD prevention begins before red:
- Keep the next signal in your scan along with speed and stopping distance.
- Remove power at the first restrictive indication.
- Brake progressively rather than relying on one late emergency action.
- Leave extra margin on an unfamiliar train, descending grade, or obscured approach.
- Acknowledge any current safety warning promptly using the verified control.
- Stop before the signal and wait; do not use the front of the cab as the only stopping reference.
Community documentation reports TPWS intervention and negative score for passing danger in its recorded build. Those numbers are update-sensitive. The safety lesson is stable even if the game changes the reward system.
Recover when the signal display is confusing
If the HUD and physical signal appear inconsistent, prioritize a safe reduction and identify the signal governing your track. A nearby signal may belong to another line. Route indicators, junction position, and track alignment can help, but only the current game can confirm the exact display behavior.
If a signal never clears, check whether your train is correctly routed and stopped, whether doors or another interlock prevent completion, and whether another service occupies the section. Avoid reversing or passing the signal unless the game provides a valid route and explicit safe action. Rejoin only after ruling out a normal wait.
Signal confidence and update limits
The official description confirms an expanding railway and current Fairholt update but does not publish signal rules. Aspect meanings, repeaters, OFF indicators, semaphore details, locations, and penalties on this page are Community reported from the British Railway community wiki, checked October 30, 2026. They are presented as a practical driving model, not a guarantee that every signal, penalty, or route exception remains identical.
Use the Routes hub to understand which line you are on, and the Stations hub to prepare for a platform departure. Verify the current HUD, safety systems, and signal locations in the live experience.
